Just a wee doodle I drew while watching some [completely unrelated] Life on Mars episodes.
I started reading Spider-Man comics when I was ten or eleven. I absolutely loved Mike Wieringo’s art and while this ain’t nothing like his stuff I was thinking of his style when I did the (admittedly too big) Spider Sense. Always liked his big, dynamic lines as opposed to the smaller, wiggly ‘stink lines’.
Today my friend Andrew sent me a text all the way from Christchurch describing a Todd Dixon look-alike he saw:
“I double-took. Tallish, kinda gangly, cargo pants, unzipped hoody, single-shoulder backpack totage, chilled-out stride, and – the clincher – beethoven hair.”
I discussed this with another (Melbourne) friend, Claire. Positing that I perhaps time-traveled at some point in 2007 and never noticed:
CLAIRE: omg no! it’s you for the FUTURE! you become the doctors companion and travel back in time and that’s who your friend saw! your FUTURE self!
ME: YES! That would explain the “chilled-out stride”
CLAIRE: Who wouldn’t se chilled out with the doctor around?!
And thus:

I’ve done a couple of arty things recently, but mainly I’ve been Not Doing Any Writing. Tisk.
I spent yesterday with a friend of mine, visiting both the Zoo and St Kilda. It was a great day, so I thought I should draw a comic about it.
Guest starring Generic Female Figure as my friend.
This took me waaaay too long to draw. But practice makes perfect or whatever so I’ll try and knock a couple of these out each week. I was inspired by a number of fantastic daily comic diaries I’ve been reading online and, like those, I’ll try to encrease my output (eventually) to once-per-day. Maybe.
Peccaries really are cool.
Here’s the other Christmas stencil. Made this for my parents. I’m not too happy with it, personally, probably due to the ammount of time it took to make. Lots of little cuts.
It’s the old Oamaru harbour Customs House, currently the HQ for the North Otago Art Society.

Semester 1 is wrapping up soon so I’ll have no excuse not to do update-worthy things more often.

I think I mentioned in a previous post how I wanted to loosen up my drawing. I’m still having a bit of trouble with it – whenever I start to get something looking good and dynamic I (mostly subconsciously) slow down and thus the magic is gone. Free, energetic line work is the Ariadne to my Orpheus, if you will.
Back in February a good friend of mine began discussing a film he wanted to make. We both got pretty excited about the concept and started putting together some concept designs. This was a great opportunity to try and loosen my lines and, for the most part, it worked. And now: Lots of bad scans!
The first page is still a bit stiff and awkward, to be honest,
The guy in this one, on the other hand, has the dynamic energy I was looking for.
Knocked this one out at 2am while waiting for a flight to New Zealand. It’s a mixed bag.
Which brings me to tonight’s effort. This is an in-joke from the Much Ado About Nothing production I recently finished. The idea was that, after the events of the play, the Friar and Sexton team up to fight crime. I might continue/expand on this theme soon, actually.
Well, there you go. Looking over these again, I think I’m going to look for some life drawing classes or something. I rekon that would really help.

I was so going to post shots of my Christmas Present Stencils wasn’t I?
Well here’s the one I made for my brother, who makes awesome stuff with chain mail.
There’s quite a bit of bleed but I dig it. More importantly, my brother digs it.
I’m going to say that the reason I haven’t updated since January is that I’ve been in a show. Since March. Here is the review, in which my praises are sung along with equally high (and far more deserving) praises for the incredibly talented and just-plain-wonderful-all-the-time cast and crew. Oh, look at me gush!
Hopefuly there’ll be some show-themed art up here within the next week, followed by some writing news.
Finally, if you haven’t already, go out and buy GUARDIAN OF THE DEAD, a YA urban fantasy set in New Zealand and written by my good friend Karen Healey.

First up, I had an article published in my old hometown newspaper the other week. While, to my knowledge, there have been no letters to the editor about it the fedback that has filtered down from readers (via my parents, mind you) has been very positive.
I’m still doing those stencils I mentioned. I got a couple done that turned out okay. Not as good as I’d hoped but they’re fine. Here’s a hastily-drawn-and-cut one I did just for laffs:
I might work on cutting a better version sometime in the near future – work on some bat-signal perspective and less of what looks like, but really isn’t, bat-paunch.
Hey! So I was hoping to have some shots of my stencils for you but it’s been so freakin’ hot here lately the stencils warped the moment I took them outside to spray. So those are under some heavy books agin waiting for a cool evening.
I was thinking of doing a 24 hour comic for New Years then thought “that’s a lot of work” so I won’t.
I did do this though:

Oh, hey.
Not much to report since my last post (which promised oh so much). I’ve been suffering from an acute lack of motivation (read “I’ve been appallingly lazy”) but things are slowly picking up.
As well as the comic, which is still being written and is still sans-artist, I’m doing a bit of writing that may be printed in a newspaper – more on that soon. I’m also working on a couple of stencil pieces as Christmas presents for my family. I might post some progress shots and the final product when they’re done provided the recipients don’t mind their gifts being shown online two months before they recieve them.
In the meantime, here’s a shot of the stencil I made my dad last year.
This year’s ones might take longer as they’re a little more ambitious and complex.
I’m thinking of putting more time into doing things like this and selling them online or at a market somewhere. I have Ideas and they will see fruition.
